Quincy is # 4 in the State of TEXAS in WORKING COW HORSE………….which is one of the events he is competing in at the State 4-H Horse Show in Abilene this week. There were 100 entries in the class, with the ages being from 9-19 with NO divisions. Quincy is 12 and scored a 275. A 17 year old girl won with a 285. They awarded buckles to the top 7. He is competing in the Reining competition today.

For those of you who do not know what reining or working cow horse is……..this is a VERY big deal!!!!
You have to make your horse ride a pattern in the correct lead, do spins, rollbacks and stops at precise places in the pattern.

In the working cow…….it is a ‘dry work’ reining pattern and then ‘cow work’…….after you complete the dry work, they turn out a ‘cow’ and you have to “box” it at one end of the arena(basically keep it between 2 marks), then you have to push it down the fence…giving it the ‘advantage’ and then “hurry” and get it front of it and turn it back down the fence…….you do this at least twice. THEN….you take it out in the center of the arena and with your horse’s right shoulder, you ‘figure 8’ the cow on his left hip…and then switch and do it on the other side. It may sound easy, but it is NOT!! It is so much fun to watch………especially when it is being done correctly!!

We are so proud of Quincy and have so many people compliment and comment on what an accomplished rider he is………I had to share!!

The picture is from one of his earlier competions this year..but displays him “turning” the cow on the fence.

I know Quincy Kent Carlton because I am his grandmother. He was born prematurely and was very small and weak, but he is growing up to be a wonderful young man. He is really smart (makes all A’s) and has a sweet, loving personality. He has been on a horse since he could sit up and his “Poppy” (dad) Ron has taught him to be a very good cowboy. I am SO proud of him. Sharon K Baker
