EBay says adios to Passport

Microsoft has arrived at the long overdue realization that its single-sign-on (SSO) service Passport is a rotting carcass on the side of the road. Over the next few months MS will begin phasing the service out. The first step of this phase out arrived in my inbox this morning. As of Jan 24th, I will no longer be able to sign-in to EBay – easily the largest client of the service — using my Passport account. Not that I ever did prior to the 24th. EBay made the original announcement on their boards in December.

Despite the failures of Passport and MagicCarpet the blogging community — specifically Six Apart — feels they have the SSO secret sauce in TypeKey. The premise being it is too much to ask users who comment across many blogs to log-in with each blog.

I have my doubts TypeKey will avoid the perception pitfalls of Passport. Note to TypeKey — if you want to support SSO you also need to support Single Sign Out. A small oversight on their part — IMO.
